Often described as the most English city outside of England, Christchurch is a peaceful city of 337,000 inhabitants. It boasts many spectacular parks and gardens, which have earned it the title of “The Garden City”. This vibrant and cosmopolitan city is a mixture of old and new. The classic neo-Gothic buildings of the Christchurch Cathedral, Arts’ Centre and Canterbury Museum, sit proudly beside the stunning architecture of the new Art Gallery. We welcome you to our beautiful city and invite you to stroll among our parks and gardens; to meander alongside the tranquil Avon River; to enjoy our festivals, galleries and theatres; to spend time in our superb shopping centres and to visit some of our local attractions. Within an easy 1 1/2 hours drive of the city are the delightful villages of Hanmer Springs and Akaroa. Hanmer is well known as a thermal resort and Akaroa is a picturesque seaside resort with a distinctly French influence. Closer to the city (3/4 hour’s drive) is the Waipara wine region where one can sample the locally produced wines or enjoy a delicious meal in one of the wineries. |
